TON VAN DER KOLK: PRODUCER, BASSPLAYER, REMIXER, ORGANISER, CONTROL FREAK
Coming from a musical background, Ton started making music on the violin at the age of six. It didn’t sound like music back than but he tried really hard with it, sometimes. At the age of sixteen he switched to the electric bass which seemed to suit him much more. After joining all kinds of projects, Ton hooked up with Phil Martin in the early nineties which developed into a long and fruitful relationship.
In 2002, when Phil Martin’s Mystical Funk played Wuppertal, all pieces fell into place. A clubnight at Club 45, hosted by deejays Soul Rabbi & Henry Storch, was a real eye-opener for Ton & Phil. It had always been there, somewhere, but now it was clear: it’s all about the funk, and it will always be!
After Randy’s Boogie Squad, Magic Frankie, Phil Martin’s Mystical Funk, The Dr. Soul Experience and many other (in)famous groups, The Soul Snatchers were born in 2006 and released their first 7″ called ‘Sniffin’ & Snatchin” which almost became an instant deepfunk classic. Inspired by acts like Sharon Jones and the Dapkings, The Poets of Rhythm, Sugarman 3 and encouraged by people like Henry, Rabbi and Keb Darge, the Soul Snatchers kept on producing and hooked up with legendary seventies soulsinger Jimi Bellmartin which resulted in another great 7″ and lots of gigs. At the same time Ton’s passion for afrobeat/Fela Kuti inspired Ton & Phil to also release an original afrofunk album which was picked up quite well by people like Paul Weller and the legendary Paul ‘Afro Art’ Murphy. In 2007 they (Afro Influenced Funk Federation) signed with Unique records who than asked deejay Diesler to do a remix. This resulted in a great remix (and club hit) featuring miss Laura Vane and that’s how it all began…
